Those living in the state of São Paulo can use the SOS Chuva application to see where it is raining and how hard at any given moment, as well as a forecast for the next 20 minutes. The information comes from a network of radars in Campinas, Bauru, Presidente Prudente, and São Roque in the state of São Paulo, and Petrópolis in the state of Rio de Janeiro, in addition to high-resolution images from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES). “The application can help the public prepare for heavy rainfall, reducing their vulnerability to weather events,” says meteorologist Luiz Augusto T. Machado, a researcher at the Brazilian Institute for Space Research (INPE) and coordinator of Projeto Chuva (the Rain Project). With 50,000 downloads, SOS Chuva can be downloaded on Android and Apple cell phones.
