The award was presented\u00a0 by USP President Jo\u00e3o Grandino Rodas. The medal is the institution&#8217;s highest distinction and is meant to honor people, entities and organizations that make significant contributions to USP&#8217;s advancement. In his thank-you speech, FAPESP&#8217;s scientific director emphasized the importance of science conducted in the state of S\u00e3o Paulo and the role of the University of S\u00e3o Paulo as a leading research university in Brazil. \u201cScientists from the state of S\u00e3o Paulo perform more science than scientists from Argentina or Mexico or\u00a0 any other country in Latin America. Scientific activity in the state of S\u00e3o Paulo is practically on a national scale. It is a joy and a satisfaction to be part of these activities and to have been lucky enough to hold positions through which I was able to contribute to their development,\u201d he said. Born in 1956, Brito Cruz is a professor at the Gleb Wataghin Physics Institute at the University of Campinas (Unicamp).
