\"\"Daniel Bueno<\/span>In 2014, a course on entrepreneurship and innovation, which currently targets students in their final year of undergraduate study at the Politecnic School of the University of S\u00e3o Paulo (Poli\/USP) will also be offered to first-year students.\u00a0 The initiative is part of the reorganization of the engineering course curriculum designed to expose students from early on in their course of studies in related subjects to business innovation implementation and coordination.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe concept of entrepreneurship is connected to the work of engineers because they have to take on a project leadership role,\u201d says Jos\u00e9 Ant\u00f4nio Lerosa de Siqueira, professor of entrepreneurship at Poli and collaborator with the USP Innovation Agency.\u00a0 \u201cTherefore it\u2019s important for young people to be exposed from the beginning of their undergraduate career to activities that involve planning and risk,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

He is convinced that entrepreneurship should be promoted among young people as early as possible.\u00a0 Also in his role as an instructor at Senai in S\u00e3o Paulo, Lerosa recalls that his interest in the subject started when he began studying civil engineering.\u00a0 \u201cI graduated in 1973 and got a good job starting out.\u00a0 But in 1978, the profession in Brazil ran into trouble and I decided to leave.\u201d Dissatisfied with his professor\u2019s salary at Poli, since 1977, and with no job opportunities in the market, Lerosa saw that the only thing he could do would be to start a civil engineering project company.\u00a0 \u201cI had to become an entrepreneur,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

By reconciling the roles as business owner, consultant and professor, Lerosa says that many of the concepts he learned while in college could only really be tested when he decided to follow the path of entrepreneurship.\u00a0 \u201cThe earlier we come in contact with our entrepreneurial potential, the more we are able to make it a reality.\u00a0 The university has nothing to lose from this.\u00a0 In fact, it has everything to gain,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

The attention to entrepreneurial training at Poli began at the graduate level in 2012. After a request from the Federation of Industries of the State of S\u00e3o Paulo\u00a0 (Fiesp) and from USP, the USP Innovation Agency established one course in entrepreneurship and innovation and another in management and administration, designed for students in various fields.\u00a0 The courses are partly online and partly on-site, and classes have already formed.<\/p>\n
