Between October 22 and 25, researchers from several countries will gather at the Intercontinental Hotel in S\u00e3o Paulo to discuss topics such as research and scientific communication policies, trends and the current status of open access to scientific publications, and measurements of the quality of research and articles. Another topic will be innovations in scientific communication, including the functions of social networks such as Academia.edu, Mendeley and ResearchGate, and the future of Google as a search platform for academic content. The keynote speaker will be genetics researcher Mark Patterson, former editor of the journal Trends in Genetics, who helped launch of the Nature Reviews series of periodicals that specializes in review articles in several fields of knowledge. In 2003, Patterson was the director of periodicals for the Public Library of Science (PLoS), which are examples of open access publications that have significant impact. He is the current director of eLife, an open access journal that publishes advances in life sciences and biomedicine, at no cost to the authors.<\/p>\n<p>Among the speakers there are names like Isidro Aguillo of the Cybermetrics Lab, connected to the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), Jean-Claude Gu\u00e9don from the University of Montr\u00e9al, Jianhui Li from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Scientific Director of FAPESP, Carlos Henrique de Brito Cruz.
