Bourguignon, 66, was nominated by the European Mathematics Association, which he chaired between 1995 and 1998. The ERC was established in 2007 by the European Union to support scientists from member countries and transnational research collaborations involved in cutting-edge issues.\u00a0 Currently, the agency receives nearly 10,000 projects every year, 10% of which are approved.\u00a0 Its total budget between 2007 and 2013 was \u20ac 7.5 billion.\u00a0 With an undergraduate degree from the \u00c9cole Polytechnique, Bourguignon holds a PhD from the University of Paris VII.
