Named \u201cMaglev-Cobra,\u201d design on the vehicle began in 1998 by researchers from the Laborat\u00f3rio de Aplica\u00e7\u00f5es de Supercondutores laboratory of the Coordena\u00e7\u00e3o dos Programas de P\u00f3s-gradua\u00e7\u00e3o de Engenharia\/Coppe post-graduate programs center, in partnership with the UFRJ&#8217;s Polytechnic School and Institute of Physics.\u00a0 The vehicle runs on a technology based on the formation of a magnetic field of repulsion between the tracks and levitation modules, made of superconducting chips comprised of ittrium, barium and copper. To create this field that makes the train levitate, the researchers cool the superconductors to a temperature of minus 196\u00baC, using liquid nitrogen.
