He received the prize during the 38<sup>th<\/sup> International Conference and Exposition on Advanced Ceramics and Composites, held in Florida. The Bridge Building Award honors scientists who are heavily involved in research in collaboration with researchers from other countries. Varela is a researcher at the Center for Research and Development of Functional Materials, one of FAPESP\u2019s Research, Innovation, and Dissemination Centers (RIDC), where he heads the research team at the Chemistry Institute of the Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp).
