In Brazil, the subject matter is still limited to the sphere of basic research, although it has gained ground worldwide over the last decade, with applications in areas like health and economics. \u201cIf a culture aimed at the technological development of this field is not promoted, Brazil runs the risk of falling behind countries like China and the United States, which have been investing in complex engineering systems,\u201d concludes physicist Constantino Tsallis, coordinator of the National Institute of Science and Technology in Complex Systems, located in Rio.
