{"id":152007,"date":"2014-07-08T13:58:51","date_gmt":"2014-07-08T16:58:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/revistapesquisa.fapesp.br\/?p=152007"},"modified":"2015-09-21T18:29:18","modified_gmt":"2015-09-21T21:29:18","slug":"biota-fapesp-addresses-marine-coastal-environments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/revistapesquisa.fapesp.br\/en\/biota-fapesp-addresses-marine-coastal-environments\/","title":{"rendered":"Biota-FAPESP addresses marine and coastal environments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XBV7MigelQY\" height=\"315\" width=\"560\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nThe second to last meeting of the Biota-FAPESP Conference Cycle addressed marine and coastal environments: areas composed of beaches, rocky intertidal zones, dunes and cliffs extended over a coastal strip of about 4,5 million square kilometers\u00a0(km\u00b2), from Cape Orange, in Amap\u00e1 State, to the unassuming Chu\u00ed Creek, on the Southern tip of Rio Grande do Sul.<\/p>\n<p>Little known, these environments harbor a great diversity of species. It is estimated that 2,2 million marine species exist, from which only 9% have been described. &#8220;This means that we ignore more than 90% of our coastal environments&#8217; biodiversity&#8221;, said USP&#8217;s biologist\u00a0Mariana Cabral de Oliveira, one of the invited speakers.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the high extinction rates induced by human activities, such as overfishing, pollution and urbanization, have contributed to hamper identification of marine species.
