Silver nanoparticles are added to the plastic in order to eliminate bacteria and fungi, protecting the wrapped food. The technology was developed by Nanox, a company in the city of S\u00e3o Carlos, state of S\u00e3o Paulo, which licensed the product to another company, Alpes Ind\u00fastria e Com\u00e9rcio de Pl\u00e1sticos. Alpes, based in the city of S\u00e3o Paulo, is already distributing the product under the name AlpFilm Protect. According to Nanox director Luiz Gustavo Sim\u00f5es, the product meets the requirements of Brazil&#8217;s National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa), as well as international regulations. Nanox was created by three Chemistry undergraduate alumni from the Federal University of S\u00e3o Carlos (UFSCar) who went on to obtain master&#8217;s degrees at the Chemistry Institute of S\u00e3o Paulo State University (Unesp), in the city of Araraquara. To develop the company and the technology, they received support from the Center for Development of Functional Materials (CDMF), a FAPESP-funded Research, Innovation and Dissemination Center (Cepid) coordinated by Professor Elson Longo.
