British Empire<span class=\"media-credits\">M\u00e1rcio Bruno<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p>On May 20, 2015, Carlos Henrique de Brito Cruz, scientific director of FAPESP, was designated an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in recognition of his work at the Foundation in expanding and strengthening partnerships in scientific cooperation between Brazil and the United Kingdom.\u00a0 He is the first Brazilian in the past 10 years to receive the honor, which recognizes the value of an individual\u2019s work in the arts, science, and public service.\u00a0 The ceremony was held at the S\u00e3o Paulo residence of British Consul General Joanna Crellin.\u00a0 \u201cFrom both the personal and institutional standpoints, this recognition reflects the achievements by FAPESP throughout its history and, especially in more recent times, its development of international cooperation in research,\u201d said Brito Cruz.\u00a0 He also mentioned the current \u201cmore complex and complete\u201d stage of FAPESP-United Kingdom cooperation.\u00a0 During the ceremony, particular attention was given to Brito Cruz\u2019s role in encouraging scientific exchanges between researchers from the United Kingdom and S\u00e3o Paulo and to his efforts as Scientific Director to forge research cooperation agreements.\u00a0 Today, the Foundation has 35 agreements with British funding, education and research institutions, as well as with companies.\u00a0 On awarding the medal, instituted in 1917 by King George V, British ambassador to Brazil Alex Ellis said that FAPESP has contributed to a change in scientific relationships between the two countries.\u00a0 \u201cThe achievement of an agreement with the Research Councils of the United Kingdom in 2009 was a momentous event in terms of the flow
