He was chair of the geography examination committee at the Rio Branco Institute, which trains candidates for Brazil\u2019s diplomatic service; the exam committees take part in the admission selection process. He had served as scientific advisor for FAPESP since 1986 and was a member of the Human Geography sub-area of the Area Panels Committee on Humanities and Social Sciences. He held bachelor\u2019s degrees in geography and social sciences from the University of S\u00e3o Paulo and earned his master\u2019s and doctorate in human geography from the same institute in the late 1970s. He published dozens of articles and was the author or editor of 26 books. The last of these, entitled <em>Territ\u00f3rio na geografia de Milton Santos <\/em>(Territory in the geography of Milton Santos), came out in 2014.
