Each winner will receive R$300,000 in 2016. They were ophthalmologist Rubens Belfort Mattos Junior (Medicine) and author Lygia Fagundes Telles (Culture). Mattos earned an undergraduate degree from the Paulista School of Medicine (Unifesp) in 1970 and a doctorate in ophthalmology from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). He is a full professor at the Federal University of S\u00e3o Paulo (Unifesp) and president of the Brazilian Academy of Ophthalmology and the S\u00e3o Paulo Institute for Teaching and Research in Ophthalmology. He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, the National Association of Medicine, the Universalis Ophthalmology Academy and the International Council of Ophthalmology.\u00a0Lygia Fagundes Telles, considered one of Brazil\u2019s premier authors, is from S\u00e3o Paulo and has been a member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters since 1985. Telles graduated from Largo de S\u00e3o Francisco School of Law of the University of S\u00e3o Paulo (USP) and has authored dozens of books of short stories as well as novels, such as<em> Ciranda de pedra<\/em> (AKA) (1954), <em>As meninas <\/em>(The Girls) (1973) and <em>As horas nuas<\/em> (The Naked Hours) (1989). Telles\u2019s works have been published in a number of countries, including France, the United States, Germany and Italy.
