Known for his work in bioethics, Hossne helped found FAPESP and became the foundation\u2019s second scientific director from 1964 to 1967. He returned to the same post from 1975 to 1979 and was vice president of the FAPESP Board of Trustees from 1985 to 1989. Hossne was born in S\u00e3o Paulo and graduated from the USP School of Medicine in 1951. In 1962 he was a founding member of the Botucatu School of Medical and Biological Sciences, one of the units that was part of Unesp in 1976. He was also president of the Federal University of S\u00e3o Carlos (UFSCar) from 1979 to 1983. He is the author of the reference book on bioethics entitled <em>Experimenta\u00e7\u00e3o em seres humanos <\/em>(Experiments in Human Beings). In the 1990s he established the Brazilian Bioethics Society. In 1995 he was one of the founders of the National Commission for Ethics in Research (CONEP) and served as coordinator from 1996 to 2007.
