S\u00e3o Paulo State Governor Geraldo Alckmin made the choice from a list of three candidates drawn up by the Foundation\u2019s Board of Trustees. Pacheco is scheduled to take office on August 22, 2016 and he will replace Jos\u00e9 Arana Varela, professor at the Chemistry Institute of S\u00e3o Paulo State University (Unesp), who passed away in May 2016. \u201cI hope to contribute my experience to the success of FAPESP,\u201d Pacheco says. \u201cThe institution is recognized as a center of excellence in Brazil and other countries. We expect to be able to work on projects that further the development of science and technology in the state of S\u00e3o Paulo.\u201d Pacheco earned a degree in electronic engineering from the Technological Institute of Aeronautics (ITA) in 1979 and holds a master\u2019s degree and PhD in economics from the University of Campinas (Unicamp). He was a postdoctoral intern at Columbia University in the United States.
