The recognition is awarded to professors who distinguish themselves through teaching and research activities or who have contributed significantly to the advancement of USP. Goldemberg is the 17<sup>th<\/sup> person to have been awarded the title of professor emeritus by the university. Goldemberg holds a PhD in physical sciences from USP and was already professor emeritus of the Institute of Physics (IF) and the USP Institute of Energy and Environment (IEE). A specialist in energy, Goldemberg advocates for the use of new technologies to promote sustainable development. He has won international prizes, such as the Blue Planet prize awarded by the Asahi Glass Foundation in Japan. He was president of USP from 1986 to 1990, as well as president of the S\u00e3o Paulo Power Company and the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science. He has also served in such capacities as minister of education, secretary of the environment in the Office of the President of Brazil and secretary of the environment for the state of S\u00e3o Paulo. \u201cThis is very important recognition for all the work I have done throughout my career.
