He replaces Leonel Perondi, who had headed up the institution since May 2012. A professor at the USP Physics Institute (IF-USP), Galv\u00e3o was director of the Brazilian Center for Physics Research (CBPF) and president of the Brazilian Physics Society. He graduated with a degree in telecommunications engineering from Universidade Federal Fluminense and holds a master\u2019s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Campinas (Unicamp) as well as a PhD in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is an associate professor of experimental physics at the University of S\u00e3o Paulo (USP).
