The distinction was granted by the University Board in recognition of his contributions to the development of the university. The ceremony took place at Bandeirantes Palace, the seat of the state government, and was attended by Governor Geraldo Alckmin, University President Marco Ant\u00f4nio Zago, and other officials and academic leaders. He is the 17th person to have been awarded the title of Professor Emeritus by the university in its 83-year history, and was already Professor Emeritus of the USP Physics Institute (IF-USP) and the Institute of Energy and Environment (IEE-USP). \u201cGoldemberg is a scientist with a sweeping social vision of science, and has promoted that vision at every institution he has passed through,\u201d said President Zago during his speech honoring the physicist. As President of USP from 1986 to 1990, Goldemberg played an important role in winning autonomy for the three S\u00e3o Paulo State universities by negotiating a proposal with the state government in 1988 to set aside a percentage of the state Tax on Distribution of Goods and Service (ICMS) for those institutions.
