The position has a term of six years. The new board member received the most votes from representatives of higher education and research institutions in S\u00e3o Paulo State in an election held in June. His name was top of a three-name list submitted to the governor by the FAPESP Board of Trustees, which also included physicians and researchers Arnaldo Lopes Colombo, from the Federal University of S\u00e3o Paulo (UNIFESP), and Dimas Tadeu Covas, director of the Butantan Institute. A specialist in organic chemistry with an emphasis on the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and natural products, Pilli has applied for 14 patents.
