{"id":289360,"date":"2019-06-24T15:17:14","date_gmt":"2019-06-24T18:17:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/revistapesquisa.fapesp.br\/?p=289360"},"modified":"2019-06-24T15:17:14","modified_gmt":"2019-06-24T18:17:14","slug":"bones-of-disappeared-politician-identified","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/revistapesquisa.fapesp.br\/en\/bones-of-disappeared-politician-identified\/","title":{"rendered":"Bones of &#8220;disappeared&#8221; politician identified"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Perus Working Group (GTP), which includes members from public human rights agencies and the Federal University of S\u00e3o Paulo (UNIFESP), used anthropology and forensic archaeology techniques to identify the remains of a \u201cdisappeared\u201d politician among human remains found in a secret mass grave in the Dom Bosco cemetery in Perus, S\u00e3o Paulo State (<a href=\"https:\/\/revistapesquisa.fapesp.br\/en\/2017\/06\/06\/battle-against-the-disappearances\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>see<\/em> Pesquisa FAPESP<em> issue no. 250<\/em><\/a>). The bones belonged to Alu\u00edsio Palhano Pedreira Ferreira, a trade union leader from Rio de Janeiro and a member of the Popular Revolutionary Vanguard (VPR). According to the S\u00e3o Paulo State Truth Commission (CEV), he was arrested, tortured, and killed by the DOI-CODI (the Brazilian agency responsible for gathering intelligence and repressing opposition during the military government) in S\u00e3o Paulo in May 1971, aged 49. DNA from one of the bones found in Perus proved genetically similar to that of Ferreira&#8217;s relatives. The announcement took place at the First National Meeting for Relatives held by the Special Committee on Political Deaths and Disappearances in Bras\u00edlia in early December.
