{"id":41525,"date":"2012-04-05T15:35:56","date_gmt":"2012-04-05T18:35:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/revistapesquisa.fapesp.br\/?p=41525"},"modified":"2013-09-20T17:40:07","modified_gmt":"2013-09-20T20:40:07","slug":"the-sweat-of-the-jatropha","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/revistapesquisa.fapesp.br\/en\/the-sweat-of-the-jatropha\/","title":{"rendered":"The \u201csweat\u201d of the Jatropha"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The need to scientifically check the water consumption of\u00a0<em>pinh\u00e3o-manso (<\/em><em>Jatropha curcas<\/em>), a plant that bears fruit with a high potential for the production of bio-diesel, led researchers at the Luiz de Queiroz Agricultural College (Esalq) at the University of S\u00e3o Paulo (USP) in Piracicaba, up-state S\u00e3o Paulo, to plan and build six lysometers, equipment that measures soil evaporation and plant transpiration, the so-called evapotranspiration. Under the supervision of Professor Marcos Folegatti, PhD student Danilton Flumignan built the lysometers with funding from FAPESP. Each device comprises a tank installed in the soil, set on a weighing system. Within each tank 25 tons of earth are placed and just one\u00a0<em>Jatropha<\/em>\u00a0plant. The variation in mass in the weighing system determines the transpiration. \u201cWe want to check the water consumption of this plant,\u201d says Danilton. \u201cTo do so we\u2019re going to study it with two types of irrigation; drip and central pivot, in addition to not irrigating.
