{"id":471621,"date":"2023-03-27T15:41:26","date_gmt":"2023-03-27T18:41:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/revistapesquisa.fapesp.br\/?p=471621"},"modified":"2023-03-27T15:41:26","modified_gmt":"2023-03-27T18:41:26","slug":"fire-and-microbe-proof-curtains","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/revistapesquisa.fapesp.br\/en\/fire-and-microbe-proof-curtains\/","title":{"rendered":"Fire &#8211; and microbe-proof curtains"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers from the University of S\u00e3o Paulo (USP), the Federal University of ABC (UFABC), and the Federal University of S\u00e3o Paulo (UNIFESP) worked with the company BR Goods to develop a material capable of killing viruses, bacteria, and fungi, in addition to being fire retardant, for use in hospital curtains. \u201cThe curtains manufactured by the company were already fire retardant. Our challenge was to add other functionalities,\u201d UFABC chemist Luciano Avallone, leader of the project, told <em>Ag\u00eancia<\/em> <em>FAPESP<\/em>. The new curtains are made of a polymer-based fiber that contains silver nanoparticles and titanium, magnesium, and zinc oxides. Despite using so many different elements, the scientists were able to preserve the desired physical and chemical properties. Usually, the greater the number of compounds involved, the weaker the polymer.
