The decrease in Brazil\u2019s participation in the global total reflects this fact: from 2.78% to 2.46% between 2021 and 2022, a return to 2014 levels<\/li>\n<li>Between 1980 and 2021, Brazil\u2019s percentage of the global total fell on just four occasions, and always by a very small amount. The last time was in 2011, when it was very slightly below the previous year (falling from 2.342% to 2.341%)<\/li>\n<li>The decline in scientific output in S\u00e3o Paulo between 2021 and 2022 occurred at a similar rate to Brazil as a whole, reflected in the state maintaining its percentage of nationwide output of 41.9% in both years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><div class='overflow-responsive-img' style='text-align:center'><picture data-tablet=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/rpf-dados-2023-06-info-3-DESK-ING.png\" data-tablet_size=\"1939x834\" alt=\"S\u00e3o Paulo: publica\u00e7\u00f5es por grande \u00e1rea do conhecimento (2018-2022)\">\n    <source srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/rpf-dados-2023-06-info-3-DESK-ING.png\" media=\"(min-width: 1920px)\" \/>\n    <source srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/rpf-dados-2023-06-info-3-DESK-ING.png\" media=\"(min-width: 1140px)\" \/>\n    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-img\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/rpf-dados-2023-06-info-3-MOBILE-ING.png\" \/>\n  <\/picture><\/div><div class=\"post-content sequence\">\n<ul>\n<li>In S\u00e3o Paulo, the drop occurred in all major fields of knowledge in 2022, but less intensely in the health sciences (-12%)<\/li>\n<li>In contrast, the decline was most significant in agricultural sciences (-23.9%). In other fields, the rate varied around the general average of -18% to -17%<\/li>\n<li>One factor that may have contributed to the change was a decrease in the number of PhDs awarded during the pandemic (<a href=\"https:\/\/revistapesquisa.fapesp.br\/en\/doctorates-dropped-significantly-in-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>see<\/em> Pesquisa FAPESP <em>issue n\u00ba 313<\/em><\/a>). This decrease likely resulted in a lower number of theses and scientific articles being written, which was only reflected in the data in 2022, two years after the drop in the number of doctorates<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"bibliografia separador-bibliografia\"><strong>Notes (1)<\/strong> Published papers indexed by the Web of Science\/Clarivate databases as &#8220;Articles,&#8221; &#8220;Proceedings Papers,&#8221; and &#8220;Reviews.&#8221; A pubished paper is attributed to a region or country if at least one of the authors is affiliated with an organization located in that country. <strong>(2)<\/strong> In the case of Brazil. For S\u00e3o Paulo, this is the first time since 1980 (the first year of this data series) that there has been a drop in the number of papers indexed by the Web of Science from one year to the next. <strong>(3)<\/strong> The numbers of papers published in 2022 is expected to change over the next few months as new papers are registered in the system.
