of doctorates awarded per year has grown since 2021, reaching 24,944 in 2023<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<picture data-tablet=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/RPF-dados-2024-09-info1-ING-DESK.jpg\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/RPF-dados-2024-09-info1-ING-MOBILE.jpg\" \/>\n  <\/picture>\n<ul>\n<li>S\u00e3o Paulo continues to lead, with 7,033 doctorates awarded in 2023, followed by Rio de Janeiro (2,993), Rio Grande do Sul (2,521), Minas Gerais (2,467), and Paran\u00e1 (1,800)<\/li>\n<li>The other states that granted at least 500 doctorates in the year were Santa Catarina, Pernambuco, Bahia, Cear\u00e1, the Federal District, Par\u00e1, Para\u00edba, and Rio Grande do Norte<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><div class='overflow-responsive-img' style='text-align:center'><picture src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/RPF-dados-2024-09-info2-ING-MOBILE.jpg\" \/>\n  <\/picture><\/div><div class=\"post-content sequence\">\n<ul>\n<li>The number of doctorates awarded in 2023 was 2% higher than in 2019, reflecting the upward trend seen in most Brazilian states (<em>see graph below<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li>The states that surpassed 2019 levels to the greatest extent were mostly located in the North, Northeast, and Central-West (with the exception of the Federal District), in addition to Esp\u00edrito Santo and Paran\u00e1<\/li>\n<li>The states that fell below the national average were some of those that traditionally lead in the number of doctorates, such as S\u00e3o Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, and Pernambuco, as well as Sergipe, Amap\u00e1, and
