Work on the collection began in 2024 with documents about two <em>babalorix\u00e1s <\/em>(Umbanda priests): Jos\u00e9 Clementino (1930\u20132021), founder of the Cabana Umbandista Pai Joaquim de Angola worship space, and Jos\u00e9 Barroso dos Santos (1920?\u20131992), better known as Lieutenant Barroso, of the Centro Humilde de Caridade S\u00e3o L\u00e1zaro charity center. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arquivoafroreligioso.cchla.ufrn.br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Afro-religious Archive website<\/a> hosts biographies, photographs, videos, audio files, and songs. \u201cAfro-religious archives, perhaps due to their private documentary nature, are little known to the world outside these communities,\u201d said UFRN anthropologist Luiz Assun\u00e7\u00e3o, coordinator of the project, in an academic article published on the website. In the past, Umbanda places of worship in Rio Grande do Norte were invaded and their leaders and followers persecuted, including by a death squad known as M\u00e3o Branca (White Hand).
