The distinction is granted to retired faculty members who have made outstanding contributions to teaching and research or who have played a significant role at the university. Since it was founded in 1934, USP has awarded just 20 such titles. Born in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1951, Agopyan earned his undergraduate and master\u2019s degrees at USP\u2019s Polytechnic School and completed his PhD at King\u2019s College, University of London. He has served as director of the Polytechnic School, science and technology coordinator at the S\u00e3o Paulo State Department of Economic Development, and USP\u2019s dean of graduate studies, vice dean, and from 2018 to 2022, dean of the university.
