{"id":79773,"date":"2000-06-08T18:49:35","date_gmt":"2000-06-08T21:49:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/revistapesquisa.fapesp.br\/?p=79773"},"modified":"2013-01-08T18:50:57","modified_gmt":"2013-01-08T20:50:57","slug":"tobacco-produces-pro-insulin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/revistapesquisa.fapesp.br\/en\/tobacco-produces-pro-insulin\/","title":{"rendered":"Tobacco produces pro-insulin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A team from CBMEG, Unicamp\u2019s Center for Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering, has managed to produce pro-insulin in tobacco seeds (<em>Nicotina tabacum<\/em>).\u00a0 It is a partial victory.\u00a0 Pro-insulin is a preliminary form \u2013 a draft \u2013 of insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas. It reaches its final form through the elimination of a central stretch of its structure, as the result of an enzyme, pro-insulin convertase.\u00a0 With the support of a FAPESP, the biochemist, Adilson Leite, intends to make the plant itself produce this enzyme, and remove the unwanted part from the pro-insulin, and so supplying insulin itself, in another year or two.
