El qu\u00edmico Fernando Barbosa, de la Universidad de S\u00e3o Paulo (USP) con sede en la localidad de Ribeir\u00e3o Preto analiz\u00f3 muestras de sangre de 453 habitantes de 13 comunidades ribere\u00f1as y detect\u00f3 tenores de plomo hasta 10 veces superiores al l\u00edmite considerado aceptable. Al buscar el origen de dicha contaminaci\u00f3n, el investigador descubri\u00f3 que pr\u00e1cticamente todas las poblaciones tuestan harina de mandioca en planchas met\u00e1licas que la contaminan. \u201cLlegamos a detectar harina con 1 microgramo por gramo de plomo\u201d, declar\u00f3 Barbosa a <em>EcoAg\u00eancia<\/em>. En Brasil no existe una legislaci\u00f3n que regule la concentraci\u00f3n de plomo en la harina de mandioca; pero, para alimentos similares, en otros pa\u00edses, la concentraci\u00f3n m\u00e1xima permitida es 0,1 microgramo de plomo por gramo del producto. Otros estudios hab\u00edan demostrado anteriormente que tambi\u00e9n el pescado est\u00e1 contaminado con mercurio.
