El centro es un homenaje a Gerhardt Ertl, Nobel de qu\u00edmica en 2007, y busca promover el di\u00e1logo entre la investigaci\u00f3n b\u00e1sica y aplicada en las \u00e1reas de electroqu\u00edmica, cat\u00e1lisis y ciencia de la superficie. El brasile\u00f1o realiz\u00f3 su doctorado en el centro Fritz-Haber, en Berl\u00edn, unidad de la Sociedad Max Planck de la cual Ertl es profesor em\u00e9rito. All\u00e1, se asoci\u00f3 con dos investigadores que participaron de la concepci\u00f3n del centro. Varela es un estudioso de vanguardia, con \u00e9nfasis en sistemas qu\u00edmicos. Aparte de su trabajo en el Instituto de Qu\u00edmica, desde fines de 2008 coordina el Grupo de Trabajo en Sistemas Complejos, vinculado con el Instituto de Estudios Avanzados de la USP en S\u00e3o Carlos, que se propone colaborar en investigaciones y desarrollo de proyectos interdisciplinarios en sistemas complejos.
