Adem\u00e1s de la alta productividad observada en\u00a0 laboratorio, no requieren agua potable ni fertilizantes para desarrollarse, ni tampoco compiten con la tierra usada en el cultivo de alimentos. En Brasil, el inter\u00e9s por el tema creci\u00f3 y cuenta con el apoyo del Consejo Nacional de Investigaci\u00f3n Cient\u00edfica y Tecnol\u00f3gica (CNPq), que invertir\u00e1 en dos a\u00f1os 4,5 millones de reales en 11 proyectos que tienen por objeto investigar el potencial de las algas para la producci\u00f3n de biodiesel. Los proyectos fueron seleccionados entre 63 presentados por investigadores de todo Brasil en respuesta a un llamado emitido en 2008.
