Ferrari sustituir\u00e1 al matem\u00e1tico franc\u00e9s Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, quien estaba en el cargo desde 2014. Ferrari, de 59 a\u00f1os, se gradu\u00f3 en matem\u00e1tica por la Universidad de Padua, en Italia, e hizo su doctorado en ingenier\u00eda mec\u00e1nica en la Universidad de California, en Berkeley, Estados Unidos. La muerte de su esposa, en 1995, v\u00edctima de un tumor, lo llev\u00f3 a abandonar los estudios sobre el movimiento de las galaxias y volcarse al \u00e1rea m\u00e9dica. \u201cSent\u00ed que ten\u00eda que hacer algo contra el c\u00e1ncer\u201d, declar\u00f3 al peri\u00f3dico espa\u00f1ol <em>El Pa\u00eds<\/em>. Considerado uno de los pioneros en los estudios en nanomedicina, por crear nanopart\u00edculas que transportan medicamentos hasta los tumores, Ferrari se matricul\u00f3 en medicina en 2002, a los 43 a\u00f1os, pero no termin\u00f3 la carrera. Al a\u00f1o siguiente, el Instituto Nacional del C\u00e1ncer de Estados Unidos los puso al frente de la Alianza para la Nanotecnolog\u00eda contra el C\u00e1ncer.
