Leptin tomar\u00e1 posesi\u00f3n del cargo en octubre, en reemplazo del matem\u00e1tico franc\u00e9s Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, cuyo mandato finaliz\u00f3 a finales de 2019, pero que reasumi\u00f3 en abril de 2020 tras la renuncia del ingeniero italiano Mauro Ferrari, bajo sospecha de descuidar sus responsabilidades al frente del ERC. La genetista es la directora de la Organizaci\u00f3n Europea de Biolog\u00eda Molecular, con sede en el Laboratorio Europeo de Biolog\u00eda Molecular (EMBL), situado en la ciudad de Heidelberg (Alemania).
