Con financiaci\u00f3n de las agencias espaciales de Estados Unidos (Nasa), de Europa (ESA) y de Canad\u00e1 (CSA), el nuevo observatorio es unas tres veces mayor que el Hubble, en servicio desde hace 30 a\u00f1os, y hubo que enviarlo desmontado y plegado. El 8 de enero tuvo lugar una etapa crucial del montaje. El espejo principal, de 6,5 metros de di\u00e1metro, que estaba doblado en tres partes, se despleg\u00f3 y asumi\u00f3 su configuraci\u00f3n final, mientras el telescopio se desplazaba hasta el punto en el que entrar\u00e1 en \u00f3rbita solar.
