El llamado proceso Cort, cuyas obras m\u00e1s representativas en Londres fueron las estructuras del Crystal Palace y la estaci\u00f3n ferroviaria de Saint Pancras, convirti\u00f3 a Gran Breta\u00f1a en el mayor exportador de hierro del mundo. La historiadora Jenny Bulstrode, de la University College London (UCL), descubri\u00f3 que muchos metal\u00fargicos esclavizados de Jamaica hab\u00edan sido transportados en el marco de la trata desde \u00c1frica Occidental y Central, que ya pose\u00edan industria sider\u00fargica. La fundici\u00f3n jamaicana, propiedad del ingl\u00e9s John Reeder, fue destruida por orden del gobierno ingl\u00e9s, para evitar que se fabricaran armas.
