El Consejo Nacional de Desarrollo Cient\u00edfico y Tecnol\u00f3gico (CNPq) naci\u00f3 en 1951 bajo el nombre de Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones, pocos d\u00edas antes de que el presidente Eurico Gaspar Dutra le transfiriera el mando a Get\u00falio Vargas. La instituci\u00f3n fue creada teniendo como referencia organizaciones similares de Estados Unidos, Francia y Canad\u00e1.<\/p>\n<p>Durante la primera reuni\u00f3n del Consejo Deliberativo, realizada el 17 abril de 1951, se discuti\u00f3 la adquisici\u00f3n de un sincrociclotr\u00f3n (un tipo de acelerador de part\u00edculas pesadas) para el Centro Brasile\u00f1o de Investigaciones F\u00edsicas (CBPF). En sus primeros diez a\u00f1os, fueron creados cinco institutos de investigaci\u00f3n.
