Bautizado como <em>Aspergillus bertholletius<\/em> en alusi\u00f3n al nombre cient\u00edfico del \u00e1rbol (<em>Bertholletia excelsa<\/em>), el microorganismo fue identificado y descrito por investigadores de Brasil, Europa, Estados Unidos y Australia (<em>PLoS One<\/em>, agosto de 2012). La especie no fabrica aflatoxina, un tipo de sustancia que, en altas concentraciones, puede resultar cancer\u00edgena. No obstante, produce el compuesto O-metilesterigmatocistina, precursor de las aflatoxinas. \u201cEsta caracter\u00edstica puede ayudar a comprender mejor la v\u00eda biosint\u00e9tica de las aflatoxinas y aportar par\u00e1metros para controlar a esa toxina que ha sido detectada en las casta\u00f1as de monte\u201d, dice Marta H. Taniwaki, del Instituto de Tecnolog\u00eda de Alimentos (Ital), de Campinas, una de las autoras del estudio.
