State Governor Geraldo Alckmin has appointed Fernando Ferreira Costa, Dean of the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), as a member of FAPESP’s Governing Board for a six-year term. Ferreira Costa, Erney Plessmann de Camargo and Cláudio Shyinti Kiminami were nominated for the position; the on-line election for the list of three nominees from which the new member would be appointed was held from June 11 to June 15. The public and private higher education and research institutions in the State of São Paulo (except for the University of São Paulo, which, by law, has a seat on another board) nominated nineteen candidates. Costa got his undergraduate degree, master’s degree, doctoral degree and title of full professor from the Medical School of Ribeirão Preto (USP). From 1987 to 1989, he attended a post-doctoral training period at the Yale School of Medicine, in the United States. He joined the Medical Clinic Department of the Medical School of the State University of Campinas/ FCM-Unicamp in 1990, and became full professor of hematology and hemotherapy in 1996. From 2009 to 2011, he was coordinator of the National Institute of Science and Technology of the Blood.
