This ring of towers, designed to release carbon dioxide (CO2) – enriched air over a small area of the Amazon rainforest 80 kilometers north of Manaus, is nearing completion. The initiative is part of an experiment by the AmazonFACE project in a reserve run by the Brazilian National Institute of Amazonian Research (INPA) and will begin operating at the end of 2024, together with five other rings. The experiment will measure the rainforest’s physiological responses to predicted climate change conditions. Two huge cranes beside each of the rings will be used to study the canopy. “Seeing the rainforest from above is an indescribable experience, it brings tears to my eyes,” says David Lapola, an ecologist from the University of Campinas.
