The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) in Australia and the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) of Singapore have reached an agreement to accelerate the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by the maritime sector in both countries. Dubbed the Australia-Singapore Initiative on Low-Emissions Technologies (ASLET), the agreement includes an investment of US$20 million into researching and implementing zero or near-zero carbon technologies, fuels, and energy sources for use in maritime transport and port operations. The partnership formally reinforces the collaboration behind the Singapore-Australia Green and Digital Shipping Corridor, which will help decarbonize shipping routes between the two countries. “We need to focus on transitioning to low-emissions fuels such as ammonia and hydrogen by developing accessible technology and infrastructure at ports that support a range of vessels,” said CSIRO chief executive Doug Hilton in a statement. The MPA is responsible for the overall development and growth of Singapore’s maritime domain and port, which is one of the busiest in the world (CSIRO Newsletter, April 17).
