Adding 10% of Brazil nut oil or of a mineral oil (liquid paraffin) to the formulation of commercial tooth pastes could help to prevent or control caries and gum diseases. This is the conclusion of a study conducted by researchers from the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais (Brazilian Oral Research, Nov./Dec. 2011). For 90 days, they tested three toothpastes with different formulations on 30 people. One group brushed their teeth with toothpaste found in the market, with no changes. A second group used the same toothpaste with Brazil nut oil, while the third group used the toothpaste with mineral oil. At the end of the experiment, there was a statistically significant reduction in the volume of problems connected with mouth hygiene in the two groups that used toothpaste with oil. With this addition, toothpaste seems to fight bacteria better.
