Drop in number of scientific articles published worldwide

  • The number of indexed1 scientific articles published worldwide decreased between 2022 and 2023, continuing the downward trend of the previous two years
  • The global number fell from 2.98 million in 2022 to 2.77 million in 2023 (-7.2%), accelerating the decline observed between the previous two years (-2.6%), when it fell from 3.06 million to 2.98 million
  • The decline was particularly accentuated by changes in China, which went from a rise of 14.5% between 2021 and 2022 to a decline of 3.6% in the following two years, and in India, which reversed from a growth of 5.6% to a drop of 7.3% in the same periods. South American countries saw less intense falls than the general trend in the more recent two years
  • Argentina and Chile, which saw significant contractions between 2021 and 2022 (12.7% and 11.2% respectively), continued to decline in the subsequent two years, but at a much slower pace (4.4% and 2.9% respectively)
  • Brazil’s trajectory was similar, with a significant drop (-13.5%) from 2021 to 2022 and a less intense one (-8.1%) in the subsequent two years

Notes (1) Published articles, reviews, and proceedings papers indexed in Clarivate’s Web of Science (includes papers in the Emerging Scientific Citation Index). (2) The countries in the table include the 20 that published the most papers in the 2021–2023 period, in addition to South Africa, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, and Portugal. With the exception of Brazil, the countries are listed in descending order of relative change in scientific output in the two periods combined.
