- Knowledge-intensive sectors (KISs) are those classified as high or medium-high technological intensity, according to criteria established by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)1. In 2022, there were 2,521,681 jobs in these sectors in Brazil, representing 4.7% of the total. After a period of contraction between 2014 and 2016, employment in these KISs grew intensely, especially in 2021 and 2022

- The high technological intensity industry that creates the most jobs is information technology services, which accounts for almost 25% of the jobs available in KISs. In addition to being the largest, it has also grown more than any other in recent years. Among medium-high technological industries, automotive manufacturing leads with 17.5% of jobs in the KISs
- Even with regional deconcentration of economic activities in recent decades, KISs continue to be heavily concentrated in São Paulo. This is reflected in the employment data for these sectors (graph, below): of the 2.5 million jobs in 2022, 1.1 million (44.4%) were located in São Paulo
- The same graph shows that the two states that follow São Paulo were Minas Gerais and Rio Grande do Sul, with around 200,000 jobs each. The number of people employed in KISs in Minas Gerais was just over 20% of the number in São Paulo; in Rio Grande do Sul, it was a little less
