French mathematician Jean-Pierre Bourguignon of the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques, in France, is the new president of the European Research Council (ERC). Bourguignon, 66, was nominated by the European Mathematics Association, which he chaired between 1995 and 1998. The ERC was established in 2007 by the European Union to support scientists from member countries and transnational research collaborations involved in cutting-edge issues.  Currently, the agency receives nearly 10,000 projects every year, 10% of which are approved.  Its total budget between 2007 and 2013 was € 7.5 billion.  With an undergraduate degree from the École Polytechnique, Bourguignon holds a PhD from the University of Paris VII. The mathematician is known for his contributions to the study of differential geometry.
