Researchers at the University of São Paulo (USP) and the French Université Paris-Diderot have established an International Consortium in Hematology. The collaboration focuses on studies to improve the diagnosis and treatment of sickle cell anemia and other blood disorders. Belinda Simões, professor at the USP Ribeirão Preto School of Medicine and one of the coordinators of the consortium, told Agência FAPESP that the consortium seeks to promote the exchange of researchers and facilitate obtaining financing for research. Sickle cell anemia is caused by a genetic disorder and affects 50,000 Brazilians. The red blood cells of those affected by the disease have a sickle or crescent shape and become rigid, hindering blood circulation.
