COVID-19

In the skies above Scotland

Skyports

In the coming months, Skyports plans to start a new drone service for transporting medical supplies, tests, and samples between hospitals on the west coast of Scotland. The project was selected by the UK Space Agency and the European Space Agency (ESA) to support the British National Health Service (NHS) in its fight against the novel coronavirus pandemic. The hope is that the unmanned aerial vehicles, which will be guided by satellites and the 4G telephone network, will greatly reduce transport times for these materials. Access to certain areas of the west coast of Scotland by car or boat can take up to 48 hours, while a drone can make the same journey in just 30 minutes. Skyports tested the system in May, successfully transporting medical cargo between two hospitals.
