Copper nanofoils, europium ions, silver and gold nanoparticles, zinc oxide nanofoils. The words refer to a chemistry that may seem mysterious, but in fact they are to some degree actual materials. The photographs are a sampling of the winners of the Surfaces in Images Competition sponsored by the National Institute of Surface Engineering with support from the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). Ten Brazilian states were represented in this year’s competition, which included 67 entries from companies and institutions. The 12 winning entries from this second edition of the competition will be featured on a calendar that will serve as a daily reminder that not only science and technology, but true beauty lie behind phenomena and structures.
