Physicist José Goldemberg, a former Brazilian education minister, national secretary for the environment, and president of the University of São Paulo (USP), received the Zayed Future Energy Prize for Lifetime Achievement, granted to noted professionals in the field of renewable energy. The $500,000 prize was awarded in Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This is the fifth annual prize awarded by the foundation, which was created by the son of Sheik Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, one of the founders of the UAE. Goldemberg said that in past years, the prize winners were involved in photovoltaic solar energy, wind power or energy saving. “This is the first time that they gave the award to someone whose main work is in bioenergy,” physicist told Agência FAPESP. One of his main contributions was designing the concept of a “technological leap in energy,” according to which developing countries can adopt sustainable strategies without necessarily following in the high environmental impact footsteps of rich countries.
