“Everyone can take steps today to ensure good hearing health throughout their life,” said Jérôme Salomon, Assistant Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), as he presented the first global standard for safe listening in video games and eSports (professional video game competitions), drafted in partnership with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The goal is to prevent hearing loss among gamers, especially children. For video game devices (consoles, personal computers, and headsets), the standard recommends a volume control that can be easily adjusted, alerts when the sound limit is about to be reached and the risk of hearing loss, and a safety mode that automatically adjusts the volume when a player switches between loudspeakers and headphones. An estimated 3 billion people play video games, but most devices and games do not have hearing safety features to protect users from harmful noise levels (WHO, February 28).
