The Center for Metropolitan Studies (CEM), one of the Research, Innovation and Dissemination Centers (RIDCs) that FAPESP supports, has created an online tool with information on the performance and operating conditions of public schools in the São Paulo Metropolitan Region. The open access platform provides information on rankings obtained in evaluations of facilities such as laboratories, athletic fields and libraries, as well as the socioeconomic conditions of students. “In addition to giving the public unrestricted access to information, our contribution is to aggregate the information by school. Citizens can drill down to a school that interests them and easily obtain data on the school’s history and its operating conditions,” says Marta Arretche, CEM coordinator and professor at the University of São Paulo School of Philosophy, Literature and Human Sciences (FFLCH-USP). According to Arretche, the platform used the combination of knowledge in the field of research on social sciences, geoprocessing, demography, statistics and programming.
