Needle in a haystack

Montage of images from the legacy survey, (c) AURA/NOAO/NSF

In large photographs of the night sky, it is easy to see the stars, which appear as small dots of various colors. Something more difficult to spot are ultra-diffuse galaxies, which emit very little light. In this collage, put together by astronomer Carlos Eduardo Barbosa, these galaxies are shown by the faint white patches in the center of each square.
